This is an exciting professional learning program offered to secondary science teachers over three days. It was successfully run in Term 4, 2010 and Term 1, 2011. It is now running again in Term 4, 2011 and Terms 1/2 2012. The workshop program has been designed by the science education staff at Deakin University to provide teachers with teaching approaches and resources that reflect current research in science education. The science education staff at Deakin University will also deliver the SOSSPL program.
International research over the last twenty years has shown that students struggle to learn key science concepts in the middle years of schooling (Years 5 to 10). There is emerging literature in educational research indicating the value of a representational focus for this learning that builds on earlier conceptual change research, and it is this perspective that informs the Switched On Secondary Science Professional Learning (SOSSPL) program.
This SOSSPL program is designed to support teachers to plan and implement classroom sequences that focus on student construction and interpretation of different representations of science concepts and processes that are described by the Science Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) and the Science Continuum P-10. Teaching approaches such as those described in the e5 instructional model and the Science Continuum P-10 will be incorporated into the SOSSPL program to support teachers when developing purposeful teaching.
